About Canada

In the northern part of North America, Canada is a province. Its ten provinces and three regions, covering 9.98 million square kilometres (3.85 million square miles), stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, rendering it the second largest country in the world by total area and the fourth largest country by land area.

The southern frontier of Canada with the United States is the longest bi-national land boundary in the world. Most of the world has a winter climate that is mild or extremely cold, but in summer, the southern areas are hot. Canada is sparsely inhabited, with woodland and tundra and the Rocky Mountains dominating the bulk of its land. With 82 per cent of the 35.15 million residents clustered in big and medium-sized towns, many close to the southern frontier, it is heavily urbanized.

The capital is Ottawa, and Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are its major metropolitan areas.

Canada is a country that speaks English. It is also necessary that a student who aspires to study in Canada be fluent in the language. The regular International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) tests are a good means of demonstrating your proficiency.

Many colleges have deadlines for filing applications and this must be taken into consideration before applying. In general, about 8-9 or even 12 months before the start of classes, a foreign student would be expected to apply (intake).

Given the high tuition fees and significant living costs of the country, ‘earn while you study’ may be the slogan of any foreign student in Canada, particularly those from developing countries.

During their studies, foreign students can work up to 20 hours a week and 40 hours during their holidays.

Since undertaking studies with no limitations on the categories of jobs and no prerequisite for a career offer, the Canadian High Commission encourages foreign students to gain work experience. The Work Permit shows that foreign students who have studied for 16 months are eligible for an extension of 3 years and students who have studied for 8 months are eligible for an extension of 1 year.

Opportunities for PR

For students who are enrolled for at least 2 years in a program in Canada, there are several Canadian visa options. Students with prior experience in Canada are more desirable to Canadian employers, and Canada is keen to attract international students who have graduated from its educational institutions because of the outstanding quality of Canadian colleges.
