What is a Visitor Visa?

A Visitor or Tourist visa is a temporary permission granted by an overseas country to a foreigner, allowing the person to enter, remain within, or to leave that country. Visas typically may include limits on the duration of the foreigner’s stay, areas within the country they may enter, the dates they may enter, the number of permitted visits to remain in that country.

Visitor/Tourist visas are connected with the request for permission to enter a country and thus are, in most countries, distinct from actual formal permission for an alien to enter and remain in the country. In each instance, a visa is subject to entry permission by an immigration official at the time of actual entry, and can be revoked at any time. A visa most commonly takes the form of a sticker endorsed in the applicant’s passport.

When filing your visa application with the embassy of the country you intend to visit, you will be asked to include supporting documents with the main visa application. The following is a list of commonly requested supporting documents:

  • Passport valid for minimum six months
  •  A photocopy of duly filled visa application form
  • Two colour photographs
  • Covering letter from the applicant stating the purpose and duration of the visit
  • Original confirmed return/onward air ticket
  • Travel health insurance confirmation of minimum 50,000 €
  • Proof of hotel reservation
  • Last 6 months bank statement
  • Original and photocopy of Income Tax Returns and photocopy of pan card
  • Original and photocopy of Investment documents
  • Copy of leave letters from employer, school or college
  • Salary slip for last 6 months in case employed
  • Retirement proof/company registration proof/school college ID and copy

Some countries may require the visitor to include a letter of invitation with their travel visa application. A letter of invitation is a formal letter from the person you intend to visit stating that they are inviting you to visit them in that country. Invitation letters help travel authorities vet potential visitors by making sure that a temporary visit is indeed the true nature of the visa request. Check with your intended destination’s government website for details on what needs to be included in such a letter.

Once you have filed your visa application, you may be requested to submit to a visa interview by the country you intend to visit. Most visa applications are approved or denied without the need for an interview, but the visa officer may request you to face a interview in case he think so.
